Getting an Idea

By Sue Cowing

Sit completely quiet at the edge

of an empty-looking tide pool,

thinking of nowhere else,

even your shadow not moving.

Sit there long enough like this and the pool

will come alive, with little damselfish

and banded shrimp darting out

from the crevices, trusting you

to be no more to them than a rock.

Ideas are tide pool creatures

bursting with life, but easily startled

back into their hiding places.

Be a rock.
